Mount Hope Historical Church established 1898
Our History
On October 8, 1898, the Reverend Daniel Washington became the first pastor of Mount Hope Baptist Church. The church was situated in a brush arbor just a few yards from its present site, known then as Mine and Gordon Roads. With a very small membership, county records showed that on October 14, 1899, over two acres of land was purchased and a deed was made between adjacent landowners and trustees of the church. The building of Mount Hope Baptist Church commenced soon after.
Over the years, Mount Hope discipleship and ministries transcended under seven pastoral leaderships. The completion of the building of the church; purchase of land; and a pastor’s study, vestibule and steeple were added to the church structure. In addition, many ministries were birth during this time, such as choirs, the Willing Workers, Ever Ready, and Ushers Clubs. In 1939, Mount Hope joined the Spotsylvania Sunday School Union which provided educational support for Black youth in the county.
After serving twenty-six years of dedicated and devoted service to Mount Hope, the Reverend Webster D. Christ mas became the pastor emeritus on March 10, 1985 when he resigned as the seventh pastor of Mount Hope. On September 29, 1986, Pastor Raymond A. Bell, Jr. was installed as the eighth pastor of Mount Hope Baptist Church. Under his leadership, membership grew tremendously. In addition, Mount Hope provides two worship services on alternating Sundays; weekly bible study for all age groups followed by prayer service, a youth bible study, and morning bible study for senior citizens. Under Pastor Bell’s leadership, the historical church was renovated, additional land was purchased, and a new church facility that include a 500-seat sanctuary, classrooms, a computer room, office space, a full-time education academy, and a multi-purpose room were constructed. As we seek to grow, we pray that God will continue to bless us!
